11. Enable the disabled
Proposed by Southampton Institute Socialist Students
The vote was unanimously in favour at ISR and Socialist Students conference 2007. No abstentions.
At Universities across Britain, students face massive debt for their education. The cost of their education is not met by a high standard of teaching, facilities and equal opportunities and access for all. When confronted, Universities come out with some political correct jargon and bureaucracy to justify not providing equal access and provisions for disabled students. We believe a decent standard of education, with fair access and provisions should be available to all students, regardless of their economic background, age, race, disability and so on. Education should be funded by central government and should meet the needs of all students.
We aim to:
Campaign for awareness of disabled students, to promote the ideas of equal opportunities and highlight the problems that disabled students face every day.
Build a Campaign to put pressure on universities to provide fair access and provisions to disabled students. Such as disabled toilets, access to facilities etc.
Link the needs of disabled students to the need for a fully inclusive, fully publicly funded education system from central government.
