3. Campaigning against the G8
The vote was unanimously in favour at ISR conference 2007. No abstentions.
Proposed by Leah from Leytonstone ISR
ISR notes
- The G8 (leaders of the eight richest countries on the planet) are meeting in Germany at the start of June.
- When they met in Edinburgh in July 2005 they were met by huge protests and massive opposition to al their policies.
- That, with socialists in Scotland in the International Socialists, ISR organised a "Make Capitalism History" red bloc on the demos and meetings to raise the need to get rid of the capitalist system and replace it with socialism.
- That there were many young people at all the anti-G8 events who were open to socialist ideas.
- That young people are increasingly active in campaigns against war, racism and climate change.
- That the situation has become even more urgent since 2005 with a worsening of the environment and with further horrors in Iraq, Afghanistan and also Darfur.
- That ISR in Rostock have informed us that the far right will also be trying to win young people to their banner.
ISR believes
- That the majority of young people across the planet oppose the policies of the G8 in terms of the wars, poverty & inequality caused by privatisation and environmental destruction.
- That young people are serious campaigners and want to know what they're fighting for as well as what they're against.
- That there is a growing audience for socialist ideas with developments in Latin America as well as the growing evidence that capitalism is incapable of meeting our needs.
- That only a clear socialist alternative based on the independent action of the working-class people can offer a solution to both the G8 and the far right.
ISR resolves
- To build support for the protests against the G8 and for this to include organising a contingent of 20 to 30 people to go to Germany.
- To link up with ISR and other socialists in Germany to co-ordinate action and meetings.
- To make sure that a socialist alternative is posed for the young people protesting at the G8.
- To begin a fund-raising campaign immediately to raise the necessary funds for the trip.
