Sheffield socialists send a message
to the G8
For the first time ever, the
Socialist Party had an organised contingent on a Sheffield
demonstration. 30 members and supporters brought the message
“Make capitalism history, make socialism our future” to the
1,000-strong demo for Peace and Justice organised by Sheffield
Stop the War Coalition.

This was to protest against the
G8 ‘in’Justice ministers’ summit in Sheffield which will see
some of the loudest cheerleaders for the ‘War on Terror’
discuss how they can make more attacks on civil liberties!
Comrades proudly marched behind
our new banners (special thanks to Liz Morton) waving flags
and placards, chanting and singing. This had a big impact,
helping us sell out of papers - 90 copies of the socialist
were sold over the day and £55 fighting fund raised.
The demo ended at the Peace in
the Park festival, where speakers, and then bands and stalls
entertained the thousands of mainly young people who attended.
It is this strength of local
opposition to the G8 visit that has forced the police to now
permit protests to go ahead within shouting distance of the
city-centre venues where these unwelcome ministers will wine
and dine.
