London plans its campaign
Members
of the Socialist Party and of ISR met in London on Monday the
30th of May to discuss plans for the G8 summit in
July. It was a small meeting but those that attended committed
their time to campaigning, fundraising and making leaflets and
banners for the week of protest.
Hannah
Sell began the meeting by discussing the Socialist Party’s
opposition to the G8 and the need to go to Gleneagles, both to
demonstrate our opposition and present the Socialist
alternative to supporters of the Make Poverty History
campaign. She explained that the leaders of the G8 are not
prepared to increase, in real terms, the aid they send to
developing countries and that what aid they do send rarely
reaches working people.
Sarah
Sachs-Eldridge then spoke briefly about the plans laid out so
far for the demonstration on the 2nd of July and
for the youth camp. She then explained the need for a
fundraising campaign beforehand. This was followed by
suggestions and ideas about how to raise money and support.
Days of campaigning have been set for the 11th and
25th June, on which we will go into Central London,
leafleting and appealing for funds. We also plan to give
trophies and certificates to the worst exploiters on the High
Street in order to raise awareness of our campaign.
